{"id":4234,"date":"2017-11-03T16:14:26","date_gmt":"2017-11-03T19:14:26","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/theinternationalobservatory.com\/?p=4234"},"modified":"2017-11-03T16:14:26","modified_gmt":"2017-11-03T19:14:26","slug":"news-center-report-concludes-isil-committed-international-crimes-during-mosul-battle","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/theinternationalobservatory.com\/index.php\/2017\/11\/03\/news-center-report-concludes-isil-committed-international-crimes-during-mosul-battle\/","title":{"rendered":"UN News Center &#8211; UN report concludes ISIL committed \u2018international crimes\u2019 during Mosul battle"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>2 November 2017 \u2013 The Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL\/Da\u2019esh) perpetrated serious and systematic violations in Iraq that amount to \u201cinternational crimes\u201d during the nine-month battle for Mosul between the terrorist group and Iraqi Government forces, a United Nations report has concluded.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThose responsible must answer for their\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ohchr.org\/EN\/NewsEvents\/Pages\/DisplayNews.aspx?NewsID=22343&amp;LangID=E\">heinous crimes<\/a>,\u201d said UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Zeid Ra&#8217;ad Al Hussein, citing the execution-style killing of civilians, the suffering inflicted on families, and the wanton destruction of property, largely during the period from November 2016 to July 2017.<\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.uniraq.org\/images\/factsheets_reports\/Mosul_report%2017Oct2016-10Jul201731%20October_2017.pdf\">report<\/a>, issued on Thursday by the UN Assistance Mission for Iraq (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.uniraq.org\/\">UNAMI<\/a>) and the Office of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ohchr.org\/EN\/Pages\/WelcomePage.aspx\">OHCHR<\/a>), documents mass abductions of civilians, the use of thousands as human shields, the intentional shelling of civilian residences, and indiscriminate targeting of civilians trying to flee the city.<\/p>\n<p>In July 2017, Iraqi Security Forces (ISF) and affiliated armed groups retook the city which had fallen under the control of ISIL in June 2014.<\/p>\n<p>The report finds at least 2,521 civilians were killed during the nine-month military operation, mostly as a result of ISIL attacks, including 741 people who were executed. The report notes that since 2014, at least 74 mass graves had been discovered in areas previously held by ISIL in Iraq.
