{"id":4423,"date":"2017-11-23T21:40:19","date_gmt":"2017-11-24T00:40:19","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/theinternationalobservatory.com\/?p=4423"},"modified":"2017-11-23T21:40:19","modified_gmt":"2017-11-24T00:40:19","slug":"news-general-assembly-security-council-fill-final-vacancy-on-world-court","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/theinternationalobservatory.com\/index.php\/2017\/11\/23\/news-general-assembly-security-council-fill-final-vacancy-on-world-court\/","title":{"rendered":"UN News-General Assembly, Security Council fill final vacancy on &#8216;World Court&#8217;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The General Assembly and the Security Council today elected the fifth judge to the International Court of Justice (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.icj-cij.org\/en\">ICJ<\/a>) concluding the 2017 elections to the principal judicial organ of the United Nations.<\/p>\n<p>Dalveer Bhandari, of India, received the absolute majority of votes in elections \u2013 conducted independently, but concurrently \u2013 at the Security Council and the General Assembly.<\/p>\n<p>He remained the sole candidate for the position after the United Kingdom withdrew the nomination of Christopher Greenwood.<\/p>\n<p>Mr. Bhandari\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.un.org\/apps\/news\/story.asp?NewsID=58064\">joins<\/a>\u00a0Ronny Abraham of France, Ant\u00f4nio Augusto Can\u00e7ado Trindade (Brazil), Nawaf Salam (Lebanon), and Abdulqawi Ahmed Yusuf (Somalia) as the five judges who will serve along with ten other judges at the ICJ.<\/p>\n<p>Their nine-year terms begin 6 February 2018.<\/p>\n<p>The Court is composed of 15 judges, who are elected by an absolute majority in both the General Assembly and Security Council. Five seats come up for election every three years.
